Welcome!
We know - it's not easy visiting a new church for the first time. Sometimes you feel like a non-member visiting a country club. Do I belong here? Am I really welcome? Will the people be unfriendly, or too friendly? Will I be conspicuous? Will it be easy to leave if I don't enjoy it? Will they ask me for money? Will I have to tell my life story? Will my kids enjoy it? How should I dress? Will the music be boring and the sermon dry? Am I welcome if I don't believe as they do?
We want to make visiting HHCC an enjoyable experience, easy, stress-free, and relaxing. We designed Heartland Hills to be "user-friendly" for people, whatever their background, including those who have never been to church before. In fact, many of our people were not regular church attenders before coming to HHCC. So you're in a majority when you visit! If I were visiting a new church for the first time, I'd like to know what to expect, so here's a brief overview.
When you arrive at Heartland Hills (located on the Northwest side of San Antonio at Tezel Road and Timber Path, in the same complex as Yonkers) for 10:30 am Worship Celebration, you'll park in a guest parking spot (identified with blue cones) and use the main entrance.
At the front door, there should be some friendly people (we call them "greeters") to say hello, and answer any question you have. If you have infants (birth through 4 years), they can point you to the nursery.
You'll notice that everyone is dressed comfortably, in anything from "office casual" to jeans and sneakers.
When you come in you'll be given a copy of "The Bulletin" which has some information about Heartland Hills, the week's announcements, and a note from me. On the back you'll find an outline for the sermon (we usually call it "the message"), with room to make notes if you like.
The service usually begins with some upbeat music (stuff you can easily sing along with), followed by a welcome and introduction to the theme of the day's service. Our speaker will usually have about 30 minutes, and we do our best to make the messages interesting, enjoyable, and relevant to daily life. The message will be based on life topics mentioned in the Bible. If the job is done right, the message will be as clear as MUD (Memorable, Understandable, and Doable). Hopefully, you'll laugh at times and maybe feel a tug at your heart too.
A prayer will follow the message, and then we usually have another song relevant to the day's topic. Many people use this time to think about today's message. Speaking of the Worship Team, they do a great job leading musically, with a contemporary feel (drums, guitars, keyboards, vocalist.). You'll have some new tunes to hum all week long.
We will close the service about 75 minutes after it began (and believe it or not, the time will fly). I hope you'll come and introduce yourself to the staff afterwards.
After the message we do have what we call a Decision and Offering time. This is designed to meet two specific objectives: First, it allows everyone to respond to the morning message (i.e., make a decision to allow God to be the Forgiver and Leader of their life, pray, make HHCC their church home, pray, or just meditate on God). Second, it is a time for our regular attenders and members to contribute financially (tithes and offerings) to the ministry of HHCC. We do not ask our first-time guests to feel obligated to give.
After the service, you'll pick up your infants from the nursery, and then we hope you'll stop by the family Room to meet me and a few other people who call Heartland Hills home. Church is about God and worship, but it's also about community and friendship so we hope people really experience warmth and friendliness at Heartland Hills.
That's about it. People constantly tell us that they really felt comfortable - "at home" are the words we hear most frequently. We certainly hope you'll stop by this Sunday. And if you do, please make sure you say hi, and tell us that you found out about HHCC on the Internet.
Thanks for your interest, and see you Sunday.
